God Loves You
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. A day all about love, typically focusing on romantic love. And if you’re anything like me, you’re a hopeless romantic who believes it’s usually the deepest love a human can experience. And if you’re also like me, you hate Valentine’s Day because you’re painfully single ( and possibly because you’re so picky). Trust me, I know the struggle. I tried to make the day nice for myself by watching Tangled, but there are only so many times you can watch it without wishing you had what Rapunzel and Eugene have (spoiler alert: it’s only one time). However, whether you've experienced romantic love or not, there is one who loves you more than anyone on this earth could.
“For God so Loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16, ESV
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 13:15, ESV).
God loves you. Let that sink in. The God of the universe, the most powerful and perfect being loves YOU. It’s crazy to think about. Not only did He create you, not only did He give you breath and life, not only does He provide for you, but He also sent His son to die in your place so that you could be free from sin and darkness and death and so that you could have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus has the proof of that love in the scars of His hands and feet. Proving that He died and rose from the dead for you. That’s more loving than any grand romantic gesture you can find in The Notebook (side note: please don’t base your ideas of a good relationship off that movie).
Not only did God send Christ to die for us, but He did so when we still hated Him. Sin is basically saying you hate God. It’s like His opposite. God is full of life, so murder is a sin. God is truth, and so lying is a sin, etc., etc. “For one will scarcely die for a righteous person- though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die- but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:7- 8, ESV). Think of that. God did this incredible act of love even when we HATED Him. Who would do anything for someone they hated or strongly disliked? I would give a friend a ride in a heartbeat, because they love me, and I love them. But what if my ex-boyfriend asked for a ride? Yeah no, I’d tell him to call an Uber. Because I’m human. And so are you. But God isn’t. He’s not just giving someone who hates Him a ride, no, He’s giving His only Son.
God is love. I know that sounds like some progressive, hippie-dippie stuff, but it’s true. God is love. And He loves you. No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter what you’ve been told. God loves you. He loves you so much, He’s asking you to accept His free gift of salvation and give up the sin that not only is offensive to Him, but that also kills you, no matter how good it may seem. God’s love is the best love you could ever experience. And when you experience such love, you can’t help but tell others and let it change your life.
