We Should Wash Feet

Image
Once again, I’ve painted a scene from the Gospels. I wanted to show the scene of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. Why? Because it shows us how we are to be as Christians. You see, washing feet was a common practice in Jesus’s culture. Walking around in sandals all day made your feet real dirty, especially since there were no concrete sidewalks like we have today. And so, whenever a host had guests over to their home, they would provide water for them to wash their feet or have a servant to do so as well. Sometimes the host would wash their feet, but that was not as common, as typically the lowest servant would wash feet. After all it’s a stinky job. Yet Jesus did it. The Son of God. The Messiah. God in the flesh washed feet. “Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a...

Holy Fire

Image
“And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.” -           Exodus 13:21      When God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, He went before them as a cloud by day and a fire by night, protecting them from enemies and leading them on the way to the promised land. They were leaving the only thing they had ever known, going somewhere they had no idea about. But God did. God knew exactly where he was taking them.      One of the reasons God led them like this was to light the way in the darkness (duh). This Christian life is very similar to following God as a pillar of fire. We don’t know what lies ahead. All we see ahead is darkness. We don’t know the future. No amount of planning or control will ever truly give us the life we think we want. The only way we can go forward th...

Get Over Yourself

Image
You must get over yourself to follow Jesus. That was the word God gave me last week in grow group. If you are to truly follow Jesus, you must get over yourself. Jesus said so Himself, although with very different wording. “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24, ESV). John the Baptist understood this when he said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30, ESV). To put it plainly, get over yourself if you’re gonna follow Jesus.  Now don't think I'm standing on a soap box here. I'm just as bad about this. I'm a performer and artist, of course I'm going to be prideful at times. I'm also an eldest daughter. All those things create the perfect recipe for me to be a bit of a diva sometimes (especially if I'm hungry). So this isn't a post about how I know what I'm doing. This is a post just as much for me as it is for you. Okay, what does getting over yourself to f...

Don't Neglect the Holy Spirit

Image
“And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” – Mark 1:10-11 As a part of my independent study and upcoming senior project, I wanted to make paintings based on the Gospels. This first one is the Holy Spirit, descending like a dove. If you’ve grown up in church, you have an idea of who the Holy Spirit is. He is the Spirit of God that lives in every believer. He is the third of the trinity, separate but the same as God the Father and Jesus the Son. I would try to continue to explain the trinity but 1, it’s hard to understand no matter how you try to explain it, and 2, trying to explain the trinity is the fastest way to heresy, as my professor Dr. Olsen said. So instead, I’m just gonna focus on what the Spirit is according to scripture, hoping you can understand Him better in your walk with Christ. And I’ll keep it s...
